Meet The Team

The Custodians

Meet the custodians of the Dublin Musicology Collective for Graduate Welfare. Together, they coordinate events and steer the DMC in a fruitful direction according to the wishes of the collective. Each custodian volunteers their time to see that the needs of the collective are met and to ensure that the DMC is run fairly. Further to their individual roles, each custodian represents their fellow graduate students from their respective institution. To get in touch with any custodian, messages addressed for their attention can be sent via our contact form.

I have recently completed my PhD studies at Trinity College Dublin, under the supervision of Dr Andrew Johnstone. My research looks at early modern music through the lens of cultural history, examining how musical culture affects and is affected by its social and political contexts; more specifically, my PhD thesis focuses on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sacred music in Dublin. @eleanorjmca

I am a final-year PhD student studying at Dublin City University under the supervision of Dr Róisín Blunnie. My research is focused on the choral and solo vocal works of the British composer, Dame Ethel Smyth. I am particularly interested in the context surrounding these works and will approach this facet of Smyth's oeuvre from an interdisciplinary perspective. My broader academic interests include the role of women in music; the relationship between music and literature; and hermeneutic analysis. @hannah_hannes

My PhD thesis explores the American influences on the music of John Williams, with a focus on scores outside of the Williams blockbuster canon. Acknowledging the influence of the Coplandesque, hymns, and brass idioms on a diverse array of musical topics commonly associated with American subject matter, I establish and showcase the functions and implications of this pervasive lingua franca. Following my previous dissertations on the music of Star Wars, my studies continue at Maynooth University, under the supervision of Professor Christopher Morris. @cpower1997

Post-PhD Rep

I have just completed a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge, where I was supervised by Prof. John Rink. As part of the DMC, I am especially concerned with the wellbeing of early career musicologists, the difficult transition to post-PhD life and the challenges we face in trying to build an academic career. Please drop me a line (via the DMC) if you would like to talk about these things. @aojbehan
